Colonizer - Usually a European country that takes over land and people outside of Europe. Colony - A place that is taken over by another country, which is used for its resources and people's labor. Encomienda - A system in Spanish colonies in which Spanish people were given land by the Spanish government. These Spanish landowners were also "given" Native American people as slaves. Independence - Most people living in colonies got tired of being colonized, so they fought for independence from the colonizers. Homework: Finish today's worksheet. Due tomorrow: Pretend you are a colony of a Great Power. (Austria, Russia, Prussia, Great Britain or France) What would be an advantage of being a colony? What would be an advantage to independence? Explain using evidence.
